So, what IS secondlife?

I was somewhat bemused when I went to create my first ebay listing related to my second life daily life: It was a land for sale listing; an auction of one my newly-aquired land parcels. The only category I could find for 'Second Life' on eBay was under 'video games'.

The first thought that hit me, "no it's not a video game you doe doe's.. Second Life is definitely NOT a video game!".. and whomever came up with that category is definitely NOT a secondlife resident, I can tell you that.

So- For starters on this blog, we will begin by defining (or trying to define) our world on Secondlife.com..

I shall start with a copy/paste of the text that came up when I clicked on the "What is Second Life" tab on the site's login page.

As a resident and an in-world being, I may or may not agree with this assessment still. But I thought it would be a good start. It is definitely a step up from eBay's 'video game' categorization. And I hope it will invite others to submit their own descriptions to me via email. I will post them as I get them. So here goes, and have a good night all.

WHAT IS SECOND LIFE?
Second Life® is a 3-D virtual world created by its Residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe.
From the moment you enter the World you'll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Once you've explored a bit, perhaps you'll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business.
You'll also be surrounded by the Creations of your fellow Residents. Because Residents retain intellectual property rights in their digital creations, they can buy, sell and trade with other Residents.

The Marketplace currently supports millions of US dollars in monthly transactions. This commerce is handled with the inworld unit of trade, the Linden™ dollar, which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online Linden dollar exchanges.
Welcome to the Second Life world. We look forward to seeing you inworld.
